The ex-aide to fomer Gov. Mike Easley has been accused of additional counts of income tax evasion and aiding and abetting during an arraignment hearing at a North Carolina federal court. Ruffin Poole was originally accused in 51 felony counts of taking trips and gifts and making money off of coastal developments while he helped hasten them through the state permitting process. Poole is also waiting to find out whether the start of his trial will be pushed back.

THE Silay City court has denied the application for the Issuance of a Writ of Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) filed by the 70 fisher folks from Sitio Bungol and Sitio Roma, Barangay Balaring. Said case is against Silay City Mayor Jose Montelibano and two others from the city. Filed as a class suit under civil case no. 2705-69, along with Montelibano were Jason Benedicto, city fisheries officer and chief of police Superintendent Jerry Bartolome.

A Chambersburg man accused of driving drunk after he confronted a Pennsylvania State Police trooper about parking in a fire lane while off duty in January entered a not guilty plea Wednesday during a formal arraignment in Franklin County Court. Ronald Doyle, 61, has also changed attorneys, hiring Harrisburg lawyer William T. Tully to defend him in the case. Doyle was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count each of disorderly conduct and public drunkenness after

A boy of 11 who suffered an asthma attack at school was left dying in a corridor because a teacher was allegedly too busy to call an ambulance. Doctors believe Sam Linton could have been saved if he had received treatment sooner. Instead, he was left alone and gasping for breath because, it was claimed, his form tutor, Janet Ford, 46, refused to help him because she was in a meeting.

A NEIGHBOUR of Fylde-based soccer star Colin Hendry, who is suing him over an £85,000 debt, says he never wanted the matter "to come to this". Hector McFarlane says he gave the 44-year-old former Blackpool manager the cash while the star's wife Denise – who died last year – was seriously ill. The cash was given as a short-term loan, Mr McFarlane said.

A teenager who broke the jaw of a younger lad he accused of being "a snitch" has been handed 18 months' youth custody. Sulejman Elezi rained eight blows to the head of his 15-year-old victim, fracturing his jawbone in two places, Bristol Crown Court heard. Elezi, 18, of Ella Close, Bristol, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, N.J. A Pennsylvania dentist has pleaded guilty to dumping medical waste into the ocean, causing numerous beach closures in New Jersey. Thomas McFarland had unsuccessfully sought to enter a pretrial intervention program that would have spared him a criminal record. Under terms of a plea agreement, the state will recommend the 61-year-old be sentenced to one year of probation and be ordered to pay the seaside town of Avalon $100,000 to offset cleanup costs.

The owner of a Brooklyn tire shop was arrested on charges of bribing an undercover investigator who was posing as an inspector with the city's Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA). The bribes were allegedly offered to an undercover investigator from the Department of Investigation (DOI) in order to avoid a DCA violation and fine for operating the shop with a suspended DCA license and to evade payment of over $2,000 in outstanding fines to DCA, according to the criminal complaint.
